Birthday Bag Program
How do you spend your birthday each year? The town of New Market wants to add to your list of festivities with its new daily Birthday Bag program. Go to the Chamber of Commerce's Visitor Center at 9386 North Congress Street to pick up a free birthday bag and a map of New Market. The map will lead you to participating businesses where you can receive a free treat, gift or coupon. The Buttercup, Valley Sports Connection, The Home Store, Jon Henry General Store, Jackson's Corner Coffee Roastery and Café, McDonald's, Southern Kitchen, Nana's Treasures and TD Distributors will all welcome birthday guests once you receive your map and birthday bag. To participate, all you have to do is present a form of documentation showing it's your birthday, like your license, on your birthday. The program is only valid during the week of your birthday so make sure you make time to visit the Chamber of Commerce's Welcoming Desk!
October 15 - 8am The Town of New Market's Wellness Committee is hosting the 7th annual Fairway 5K for Fitness on Saturday, October 15th, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. The goal of Fairway 5k is to encourage healthy living, and community involvement, and to raise funds that will be used to purchase new fitness trail equipment in the New Market Community Park. The race begins in the New Market Community Park, travels onto the Shenvalee Golf Course, and returns back to the park. Everyone is encouraged to participate! the Virginia Museum of the Civil War 8895 George Collns Drive, New Market Saturday, October 22, 2022 6pm - 8pm Explore the battlefield after hours and step back in time with our annual lantern tour program, "Spirits of New Market," as we celebrate the indomitable spirit of those whose lives were impacted by the Battle of New Market. You'll follow your guide on a lantern-lit, tour of the Battlefield encountering living historians portraying the soldiers, townsfolk, and Bushong family. While interacting with the characters, you'll be able to lend aid to the wounded, ask questions and experience the Battlefield in a whole new way. $10 per adult (ages 13 and older) $6 per youth (ages 6-12) Children 5 and under are free. New Market Residents $5 (ages 6+) with proof of residency. Each walking tour lasts about 45 minutes and covers approximately ½ mile over grass and gravel. Tickets go on sale at 6:00 p.m. on October 22nd. Tours begin at 6:30p.m. and depart the Virginia Museum of the Civil War every 15 minutes. The last tour will depart the museum at 8:00 p.m. TRICK or TREAT on CONGRESS STREET
October 31 5:00pm - 7:00pmRAIN OR SHINE!!! The New Market Merchants Committee & the Town of New Market will be hosting their annual Trick or Treat on Congress Street. Visit various downtown businesses who have left their light on for trick or treaters and you&apost;ll leave with a special treat! While collecting candy, be sure to browse our stores for upcoming holiday gifts. Come on out and have a spooky safe time in the New Market downtown businesses!

New Market's place in history became secure on May 15, 1864 when a force of Federal troops under Gen. Franz Sigel was routed by Confederates forces under the command of General John C. Breckenridge, following a fierce battle in mud and rain west and north of the town.
